A Baby Sitter’s Guide To A Safe House

The house, pet and baby-sitting business is in full swing. There are agencies that specialize in such services but many young adults do it as a part time job to earn extra cash between their studies and work. If you’re considering taking up an offer to look after another person’s house while they are away there are a few things that ought to be kept in mind to ensure that you are safe and the house stays secure.

Eyes on the prize

Babies and pets need constant attention and supervision. Baby proofing every nook and cranny is impossible. Any everyday item imaginable is immediately a death trap. Keep the children and house-trained pets in selected areas such as the living room or bed room away from stairs, the office or the kitchen. If to be taken outside for a walk or fresh air make sure that the children and pets stay close to the entrance and steer clear of hedges and bushes. It’s also advisable to walk dogs before sun down to avoid having to navigate an unfamiliar neighborhood in the dark. When bringing in dogs through the garage, make sure to keep the pets well away from the tilting door to avoid any accidents and make sure all doors are closed before letting them loose from their leashes.

Locked and bolted

Have every entrance and side window firmly shut and locked. Because you will be preoccupied with taking care of the baby or pet in your care, it is best to take the precautions of having the house secure so that you will not have to leave the child unattended to run about making sure a certain window is locked or wonder if a certain door was open or closed five minutes ago. There’s no need to be paranoid and picture a case of zombies breaking in but as it is a stranger’s house it is best to have every entrance and window secure with the locks in place.

Don’t let anyone in

Unexpected guests can be terrifying, especially when you’re in someone else’s home. Never answer the door without the deadbolt on and checking to see who it is. Always double check with the owners of the house as to whether the guest should be let in, regardless of you knowing them to be their family or friends. A security camera and alarm system or garage door service would make it much easier as you’d be allowed to monitor who is at the door and only the owner will be able to let themselves in.

But as not all houses have such facilities it is important to be mindful of your surroundings and double check with the owners if anyone were to visit. The baby and pet sitting business is booming so it is advisable for all responsible young adults to pursue it as a way to be occupied and make extra money. Although taking care of a child or pet and the added responsibility of making sure a house is secure can seem intimidating, making sure everything is safe and in order is not as hard as it may seem.
